For the fourth Rosendal Chamber Music Festival, Leif Ove Andsnes, has chosen the title “DSCH” – the musical signature of Dmitri Shostakovich. Over four days from 8 – 11 August, Andsnes and this year’s guest artists will perform a wide spectrum of the Russian composer’s works alongside music by his predecessors, contemporaries and successors.
Quatuor Danel begins its eleven-concert, two-season survey of the Polish-Jewish-Russian composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s string quartets, presenting the oeuvre alongside works by Weinberg’s contemporary Shostakovich.
In this second instalment of their series, the Danel players surround Weinberg’s tense Third Quartet of 1944 with Shostakovich’s widely-ranging Second Quartet of the same year, and his heartfelt and dramatic third work in the medium (1946).
